Sharp Display Visits KoKonna to Explore the Future of AI Art on Color E-Ink Displays

Sharp Display visits KoKonna to explore how color e-ink displays technology and AI art creation work together to shape the future of digital art frames.

Recently, Mr. Takayuki Mori and his team from Sharp Display visited KoKonna’s Shenzhen headquarters. As a key technology partner behind KoKonna’s color e-ink displays, the Sharp team came to see how their display technology performs in real artistic applications.

The visit also focused on a deeper topic: how AI-generated art and paper-like color e-ink displays can work together to create a new kind of digital art experience for everyday homes.

A Closer Look at the Hardware Behind KoKonna’s Color E-Ink Frames

During the visit, the Sharp team experienced KoKonna’s full lineup of color e-ink art frames. Unlike light-emitting traditional screens, KoKonna designs frames to match real papers look and feel. The goal is simple: art that is comfortable to look at for long periods and feels natural in a living space.

With Sharp’s advanced display driving technology, KoKonna has been able to improve one of the biggest challenges of color e-ink — color performance. On display were artworks in different styles, including oil painting textures, soft watercolor transitions, and fine sketch details.

On the non-glowing e-ink surface, these works showed depth and balance similar to printed art. Mr. Mori spoke highly of how the display handled subtle tones and textures, noting that the experience felt closer to real paper than to a digital screen.

Turning Words into Art: KoKonna’s“One Sentence → Art”AI Feature

Beyond hardware, KoKonna presented its core AI innovation to the Sharp team — the “one sentence art feature.

The idea is easy to understand. A user types a short sentence describing what they imagine. KoKonna’s AI then creates an artistic image based on that description. With one tap, the artwork is sent directly to the color e-ink frame.

KoKonna believes that art creation should not feel difficult or exclusive. This feature allows anyone, even without artistic skills, to create something personal and meaningful. Mr. Mori personally tried the feature during the visit and expressed strong interest in how smoothly AI creation and display output worked together.

He noted that this combination answers two modern needs at once: the desire for self-expression, and the wish for calm, well-designed home environments.

Technical Discussions: Improving How AI Art Appears on E-Ink

After hands-on demonstrations, both teams held in-depth technical discussions. The focus was not abstract ideas, but practical improvements that directly affect user experience.

Adapting to different art styles
The teams discussed how display drivers and image processing could adjust automatically for different AI art styles, such as sketch, printmaking, or realistic painting. Each style needs different grayscale and color curves to look its best on e-ink.

Better color balance on color e-ink displays
Sharp and KoKonna explored ways to further refine color tuning at the driver level. The goal is to preserve more detail and smoother transitions when displaying AI-generated images.

Low-power and sustainable digital art
Another key topic was sustainability. Color e-ink displays consumes very little power, especially when displaying static images. When combined with efficient AI creation, this opens the door to a low-carbon, always-on digital art lifestyle that does not add energy burden to daily life.

Why This Collaboration Matters

This visit showed how display technology and AI creativity can support each other when developed together. For KoKonna, Sharp’s display expertise helps bring AI art closer to the feeling of real, physical artwork. For Sharp, KoKonna provides a strong example of how color e-ink can move beyond signage and into personal, emotional use cases inside the home.

Instead of fast-changing screens, this collaboration focuses on art that stays, invites calm, and feels human.

Looking Ahead

KoKonna plans to continue working closely with Sharp Display to further refine both AI algorithms and display performance. The shared goal is to make the color e-ink displays frame more responsive to artistic intent — a screen that not only shows images, but understands how art should feel.
